Panormos
We went to Panormas in 2008 which is a little town hidden away, not more than 20 miles from the town of Rethymnon. On the coach journey to the resort, we were told by the rep. that there were no exchange facilities except in the town of Rethymnon and at that time the only ATM machine in Panormos did not accept our card. Fortunately we had a lot of euro’s left from a previous holiday which lasted us nearly a week.
Our accommodation was unique as we had the whole of the ground floor and the bedroom was a mezzanine. The downside of this was, that all the heat went upstairs and there was only a small door to open, which gave us accessed to the balcony roof. Air conditioning was essential and was 4 euro’s per night. The room did have its own safe but on close inspection one could pick it up and walk out with it, so I did not use it.
The building had two apartments and Mrs Delboy wisely picked this one as it had an upstairs toilet whilst next doors toilet was downstairs.
We did hear our neighbour falling down the stairs one night, he told us he did not want to wake his wife up by turning on the lights during a call of nature.
IMO, Panormos was the least attractive of Greek places that we had visited but the little town was a warm friendly place. In the evenings, tables and chairs were laid out to form open air restaurants in the streets.

The food was very cheap and ½ litre of wine with the meals for two would cost 20/25 euro’s.
There were three small sandy beaches and the one we picked was below a cliff and had a tavern to buy lunches and beers. Chair beds and a parasol were 6 euro’s.

To use the bus service,to go to Rethymnon one had to buy a ticket in the supermarkets, as drivers did not collect money. On the journey in, I could see Rethymnon had many bars and restaurants and looked a lively town. We managed to get a very good rate of exchange in a travel agent next to the old harbour. After which we decided to go up to the castle and walking along the walls, there were some good views of the town.
After the castle walk we had lunch in one of the many taverns surrounding the old harbour.
Finally we walked round the old town before getting the bus back to Panormos.
In Panormos we noticed there was a goat station on one of the cliffs and a lighthouse around the corner. So we decided to do the walk.
and eventually we reached the highest point and there was a pile of stones and it seemed that each walker had added one, so Mrs Delboy did the honours for us.
We also took a train trip to a pottery works and a grave yard
And saw some super sunsets
As the holiday continued we got to know the restaurants and IMO found the best near the end of our holiday and ate there for the last three days.
All in all a nice quiet resort
