Puerto Andratx _
PostSubject: Puerto Andratx   Puerto Andratx Icon_minitimeWed Aug 25, 2010 3:20 pm

Puerto Andratx (Port d' Andraitx) is situated in the South West corner of Mallorca and is easily reached from Palma by the Ma 1. It took us about 40 minutes to drive from Palma. The Ma 1 follows the coast past Palma Nova, Magaluf, Peguera and Camp de Mar and on to Puerto Andratx. We stayed for six nights at the Mon Port hotel which is a 5 minute walk from the sea front.

Puerto Andratx was at one time a small port /fishing village serving the town of Andratx which lies about 3 miles inland.
There is very little of the original town in evidence and it has been developed into a marina/resort which surrounds the bay. There are a handful of small hotels in Puerto Andratx which are scattered around the resort and don't dominate it in any way. The houses and villas in the resort are mainly second/holiday homes for the wealthy yacht owners who berth their vessels in the port.

The resort is extremely nice, well kept and clean. It attracts mainly well to do more mature visitors (mostly German) many who have boats in the large marina. There is no real bathing beach to speak off so is not really suitable for beach lovers. The atmosphere is very laid back and the resort is very quiet with NO entertainment in any of the bars or restaurants. The marina is huge and stretches around 1/2 of the resort seafront. There are a few bars in the marina as well as a a leisure club which is open to the general public. It has a very bice bar and restaurant which was reasonably priced in comparison to the rest of the resort.

The leisure club has a nice pool with sun loungers which were reasonably priced as well as being very nice and quiet. If
you were renting an apartment with no pool it would be perfect for swimming and sunbathing.

Puero Andratx caters for visitors who are not budget conscious and as such the prices in the bars and restaurants are extremely expensive.

We ate in the hotel the first night but the food was a huge disappointment and we didn't dine there again. We ate at a few different restaurants while we were but were mostly disapointed with the quality especially given the prices we paid.
There are bars and restaurants all along the seafront and you pay a premium if you want a sea view. The restaurants in the streets behind the seafront are slightly cheaper but were still expensive. We did have one half decent meal which wasn't too expensive, I can;t remember what it was called but it is at the west end of the town just before the bridge to the marina.

The resort gets busy at weekends with people spending the day there hoping to catch a glimpse of some minor celebrity or the like. The resort is very quiet with none of the bars playing loud music or offering any sort of entertainment. People watching is the main pastime, come 11pm the bars were getting very quiet and by midnight the place was virtually deserted.

We thought Puerto Andratx had a lot of plus points, it was beautiful had a wonderful marina, it was peaceful and clean and had a great relaxed quiet friendly atmosphere, but ultimately it lacked character. You really could be in any European upmarket marina resort. It has all the expensive designer shops, the marina, the trendy cafe bars and expensive properties but it has nothing to differentiate it from all the others.

There is still some fishing boats who fish from the port and there is a fish market which is worth a wander round.

We had a car and did a couple of trips, we spent a morning in the Town of Andratx which was great as we needed a bit of the real Mallorca, we then headed to Sant Elm for the afternoon and also loved it. Sant Elm seemed to have some of the character that Puerto Andratx lacked.

Our only other trip was into Palma Nova as Mrs H had arranged to meet a colleague from her work, I had hoped to catch up wit moocher but he must have known I was coming and headed back to the UK.

To sum up, we enjoyed our time in Puero Andratx, it is beautiful, friendly clean, laid back and very low key all of which I like in a resort. It just didn't have enough character or feel Mallorcan/Spannish for us. It was also quite expensive to eat out and have a drink or two.

The Entrance to our hotel. It was in a very quiet area about a 5 minute walk from the sea front

If you have a few bob in the bank you could splash out on these as both are for sale. Not sure how much the yacht is selling for but the house was a cool 16 million euros.

Hayzer that's excellent, you make it as if I've been there myself. I can imagine the yachting fraternity tying up there and i guess they would have somebody on board doing the cooking hence, the food quality being offered. It looks a nice place to pass through and stop for that one beer.

I look forward to my visit to that house when Daryn and Moocher cash in.

PS I know you have put a lot in to this report, well done

Thats very true Daryn it is not in the brochures, this place seem passes them by. I had to google the place and then only one site
went into any detail and IMO did not give the feel of this report.

I love puerto andratx . . . we go every year ( kind of ritual now )

Mooch round shops, seeing what I can't afford ! - coffee and cake at cappuccino

Then a stroll round the marina

Right round other side - opposite shops / restaurants, is a little bar / cafe ( which would be REALLY rude ) not to stop at !

WHAT A FANTASTIC SUNTRAP ! drink & suntan all in one !
