| Seems that Mallorca is introducing a tourist tax again this year, can't find a good link with the in's and out's of it, but looks like it'll be about €1.50 a day per adult. Collected at the the hotel when you check in by the sound of it. Running from May - Oct. Might as well put a sign up saying Go Away! We don't want you! |

| I have seen articles in the bulletin about this for a few months now and apparently it is kicking in on the 1st June.
They have still not said who is due to collect the tax, but I assume it will be the hotels.
I also read a comment from a reader in the bulletin this morning saying that he popped into a UK travel agent to do a fake booking and asked about the new tax, the agent blagged it by saying it wasn't true and just a rumour! Shocking work from the agent.

| So, if you stay at a friends apartment, there won't be a charge/tax? No one to collect it anyway? That's it.... everybody round Ro's! |

| Dermo, you could be right but the fact that the Balearic Government has said it is payable for those staying in hotels or rented accomodation, how will they do that? They say its going to be rolled out in June and yet they still havent said how it will be done!! |

| Well we have heard it all before so maybe they will start next year again Its a stupid bloody tax TBH and not good for an Island that has been struggling for the last few years. Im surprised the local business people are putting up with it _________________ |

Did they say that? At a loss then as how they will collect. |

Again, can't see that. Free travel across borders for EU citizens isn't it? I suppose they could call it a departure tax and then it would be collected by the airlines like it is in the UK, built into the flight price. But what about arriving by boat? Cruise ships, one day stay, no overnight in a hotel? What about businessmen that live in Majorca but have to go to (say) Barcelona once a week, returning the same night? No, it has to be levied on hotel/apartment staying visitors/tourists. Can't say I'd be too happy if I had to pay a tax if I stay at a travelodge in the UK if I go away for a weekend. What sort of 'tourist' am I? So, maybe there's exemption for Spaniards. But isn't that discrimination? No wonder they haven't announced yet how they are going to collect it. Sounds like a legal minefield. |

| Mark, trying to rush it through with no thought.
I get the fact they are trying to raise extra funds, but I really think it will put punters off that are considering other countries as well as Mallorca.

| Nice find and good to see that the hoteliers and businesses are prepared to fight. Maybe the likes of our forum, TA and such like should put up a petition declaring we will boycott any of the Islands that introduce such a tax. Its peed me off the last few years the extra I have had to pay but this is a pee take. It will cost us an extra €16 for our 4 nighter it doesn't sound like much but on top of paying everything else it all adds up.
A typical €28 for a week for two adults staying a week and double for two weeks thats crazy.
I love Majorca and been going for years but slowly getting sick of the price hikes. Friends of ours that used to go every year with us stopped and go else where now because they refuse to pay the flight prices which are considerably more than gong to the mainland.
I feel the Balearic governments think they are invincible and can get away with this maybe because of all the problems around the world stopping people going to the likes of Tunisia etc.
I really hope it backfires on them but I do feel for the many business people.
I mean this tax has nothing to do with the carbon footprint its just a way of getting more money although It would work if no one went back lol.
Ive seen the nights in the likes of Manos go from being rammed with people to being so empty only one side opens in October.
Majorca beware _________________ |

| We've sort of said the same thing. The evening entertainment (and weather!) is better in Tenerife and it's about the same cost for us. My brother David has just come back from one week in Portals Nous, weekend back here because of work, then 5 days in Benidorm, he said Benidorm from an entertainment POV was hands down streets above Mallorca. I can see us looking further afield next year. |

| Just a 2017 update, we was charged €1.65 a night each on our recent stay, that's up from €1.10 last year. Not sure if there's a difference between the star rating of the hotels so that it can be worked out, as it's meant to include 10% IVA tax (VAT) as well. |
