PostSubject: Wales, Warner's, Bodelwydan, Portmerion and Snowdon   Wales, Warner's, Bodelwydan, Portmerion and Snowdon Icon_minitimeThu Nov 25, 2010 8:01 pm

Five years ago we booked Warner’s holiday at Bodelwydan in Wales for a four day break with the mother-in-law but unfortunately the mother-in-law fell and had to have a hip operation before we were due to go and the only way the holiday was going to happen was for her to be pushed around in a wheelchair.

The accommodation at Bodelwydan is in a castle that Warner’s had sympathetically renovated into a holiday centre for adults only.

The accommodation was superb overlooking the courtyard and grounds, I believe, we had what is classed as a signature room.

A full breakfast was provided and was help yourself, so you never went hungry.

Meals in the evenings were generally a carvery roast and different joints were brought out each evening, there were of course, other choices if you did not like the meat dishes. IMO the food was excellent.

During the day, entertainment was laid on, like archery, bowls, darts and various other things.

The evening entertainment usually started with a quiz and then a game of bingo, followed by the main entertainment provided by its own entertainment staff and at that time, the lead singer was ill and the standin was disappointing. A lot of Warner’s entertainment can be quite good, if you pick the right week/weekend with stars and tribute act appearing

The drinks were IMO expensive and we were a captive audience but all in all, we do enjoy the Warner Breaks

We had a trip to Llandudno for our first day and then on our second day we decided to go to Portmerion to see the Italian style buildings and grounds which became the location for the cult TV series The Prisoner.

I was a little disappointed, as parts just weren’t wheelchair friendly, however we did have a good day there.

Many years ago I had the experience of going to the top of Snowdon by the train and it had been on our itinerary to take the mother-in-law up the mountain but now as she was in a wheelchair, would it be possible. Well, we gave it a go and I telephoned the office at Snowdon and they were really helpful.

At Llanberis where the railway starts we got her into the train leaving the wheelchair behind.

At the summit they had placed a wheelchair against the wall for us. So I was able to get the mother-in-law 3495 ft up a mountain but unfortunately the summit was covered in mist that day and there was nothing to see but she did enjoy the experience.

Yes we did bring her down again.

Very good stuff del.We have been to Bodelwyddan a few times as we can drive there in less than an hour. When you were there did you encouner Steve Hodge who plays in the resident band but also plays guitar and keyboards in more exclusive lunchtime (in the library) and late night sessions? What a talented guy.Could you envisage a solo entertainer performing Bohemian Rhapsody? Steve does.I suspect for the late night sessions he needs a bit of chemical help Twisted Evil but fair do's he is a marvellous entertainer.Ask him to do Dire Straits' Sultans of Swing-he even plays the Knopfler riffs!Had to laugh-I saw in today's (yesterday's?) Sunday Telegraph Bodelwyddan was recommended.Said it is a folly castle (true) overlooking the sea (not true unless you have very strong binoculars!).

Think you should Y.With your penchant for mountains there are more than enough for you to go at in Snowdonia. The Llanberis path up Snowdon (the one that is parallel to the Snowdon Mountain Railway) is the easiest way up but not the most interesting.I recommend the PYG Track which starts from the YHA at Pen-y-Pass.PYG stands for Pen-Y-Gwrd.That was the hotel where the Everest ascent party that conquered the world's highest mountain for the first time in 1953 was based for their pre-Himalayas training.

The PYG Track meets up with the Llanberis path about 500ft of ascent short of the summit.Mt Snowdon 3,560ft is the highest mountain in England and Wales. The highest mountain in England is Scafell Pike 3,210 ft.All overshadowed by Scotland's highest Ben Nevis 4,406ft (a long slog!).I have been up them all and many more besides. These days I can't climb our 2 flights of stairs without gasping for breath!
