Day 1 Thursday. All 16 of us met at the Old Cattle Market car park in Kettering at 7.15am. 2 lads went in a van with all the golf bags, & the rest of us were in a 16 seater mini bus. We set off up the A14 to the M6, & proceeded North. A quiz was organised with questions on sport & James Bond, who played JB in what film & who sang the title song, I am happy to say that yours truly won with 40 points, take note Delboy.
Surprisingly we had a steady run up to Keele Services, near Stoke on Trent, for a tea & pee break. Then back onto the M6, past the Thelwall Viaduct, to the M56 junction 20, then the A55 & onto the A470 to Llandudno. We arrived at our hotel The Royal, http://www.royalllandudno.com/ & left our bags to go on to our first course of the weekend. The trip cost a total of £285, which included 4 rounds of golf, bed, breakfast & evening meal for 3 days, which we all though was pretty reasonable. The prize money for the golf was £15 each to the top pair & £10 to the best individual score. Plus £8 per Par 3 nearest the hole, but was rolled over if not won, so the next hole could be worth £16 etc.
Our first course was at Conwy GC http://www.conwygolfclub.com/ which was very picturesque to say the least. We had done good time coming up & had 3 hours to kill as our first tee off time was not until 2.37pm. So we had either a bacon or sausage roll & a couple of drinks. The draw was made to see what order we went in, & I was drawn out in the last group of 4 with Tony C, (there were 3 Tony’s), Tex & Pat. We teed off & spent the next 41/2 hours playing golf in glorious sunshine. We finished as the sun was going down, & I had amassed 25 Stableford points, the winner had 38, so I was about 8th after the first round. We went back to the hotel for dinner, which consisted of 6 starters, 6 main meals, with an extra added special every night & 6 desserts. So fed & watered we went down town for a couple of drinks, then came back to the hotel for a night cap.
Day 2 Friday. We got down to breakfast for 8am, as the first tee off time was at 10.08am. Breakfast was the usual cereals, fruits, juices, toast & marmalade & a full Welsh Breakfast, which basically is no different from a full English one. :n!b: So suitably fed we set off for our second course this time actually in Llandudno called North Wales GC, again spectacular views of the sea & surrounding countryside. http://www.northwalesgolfclub.org.uk/nwgc.aspx Again I was drawn out last with Tony D, Garry & Rob, & again played golf for 41/2 hours in glorious sunshine, but a lot windier.
This time I scored 33 points, finishing joint second behind the winner who had 35 points. This meant that I was now about 4th on the leaderboard. We sorted out all the winnings & headed back to town, where myself & 2 others, took a walk along the promenade & then onto the pier. Forgive the photo quality as they were from my phone & not a camera.
We then went back to the hotel to chill out ready for dinner, which meant unfortunately we missed the first & most exciting half of the England v Bulgaria match. We then went to the Kings Head pub which is adjacent to the Great Orme Tramway. http://www.greatormetramway.com/ After that we went back to the hotel just down the road for a night cap.
Day 3 Saturday.Again we had breakfast at 8am, as we were teeing off at 10am this morning at Rhos on Sea GC. http://www.rhosgolf.co.uk/ This time I was drawn out first off, with Stewart, Derek & Pat. We had to look out for the weather, as it was forecast rain, which duly arrived as we were on the 12th fairway. Luckily, it only lasted about 35 minutes, & it had stopped by the time we got to the 16th tee. On the 15th Par 3 124 yards, I was nearest the hole on the green, & duly won £16, as the previous Par 3 was not hit, kerching. On going into the Club House I found out that I came second with 37 points, behind the winner on 40 points, but I won another £15 kerching again.
So all in all, I was lying 2nd on the leader board, 8 points behind the leader. We went back to the hotel, & chilled out ready for dinner. We went back to the Kings Head for a few drinks then into town, then back to the hotel for a night cap.
Day 4 Sunday.
We got up earlier today, as we had to load the mini bus, before breakfast, as we were teeing off at 9.52am. We duly had breakfast, & set off for our last course at Prestatyn about 40 minutes away. http://www.prestatyngolfclub.co.uk/ Today the format was the bottom 4 went out first, then the next & so on. I was in the last group with Martyn, (the leader by 8 points), Tony B & Tony C. Again we teed off in glorious sunshine, & by the 9th hole, I had clawed back 2 shots, so Martyn was leading by 6 shots now. We didn’t really think about it anymore until the 16th hole, when I asked Martyn what his score was. He had scored 8 points & I had scored 11, so now I was 3 shots behind him. Well after the 16th & 17th holes I was only one shot behind him, going down to the last hole. We both teed off & landed on the fairway, Martyn was a bit further ahead than me, so we took our second shots, further down towards the green. My 3rd shot got on the green, but Martyn’s went through the green & he had to chip back on. So by this time, word had got round that it was only one shot between me & Martyn, & the other lads gathered around the balcony overlooking the 18th green. Martyn chipped on about 8 feet past the hole, I putted about 15 inches from the hole. So if Martyn putted this in he had won. He steadied himself & eyed up the putt. He pulled back his putter & hit the ball towards the hole, & would you believe it he…………………………………………
To be continued, (if you want to know the outcome)
