Sunday morning started well
but got more cloudy, so in this walk, you will notice a change in weather halfway through because I did the first part of it on Monday the next day and joined them together lol
so here we go, at the far end of Golden Beach
along this stretch the sand is perfect but the shelf into the sea itself has a fine shingle
it shelves down to a depth above you knees for about 3 metres out then rises up to be a sandbank before gradually shelving out to sea
this is one of the few restaurants down this end that is only metres from the sea
you can walk out quite away to get to shoulder level
I was told in 1985 only the Vigli restaurant building existed at this end, plus one other place further up the bay
all these chairbeds are put out for customers by the restaurants, so lots of chairs, as they don't want to miss out on customers
for us, we always buy a lunch wherever we go, so to us it's free sunbeds lol
on this photo you should be able to see the small shingle, its not uncomfortable in any way
All the restaurants colour code their beds, so you know which restaurants beds you are sitting on
In general the restaurants are happy if you have lunch with them
but some people do abuse the system and say they will buy a drink later
later comes and they don't buy a drink
The guy told me they have to pay huge ground rents
And they only have a short season to recover this
the general rule with our guy is, a drink last 4 hours
after which you expected to buy another for the afternoon lol
so establishing yourself with the same guy builds up the trust between you that you are going to have lunch lol
and having the odd frappe or two just before lunch suited us
so here we are at a point were there is banana boats, jet ski's, paragliding and other types of stuff for hire
I'm laughing at myself here, imagining I puffing up the beach telling you all this, as Micheal Palin would lol
if you didn't want to buy a drink or eat and you do your own thing there are chairbeds / parasols for hire for 5 euro's a day
if you notice the sun is now missing, that is because I did this bit on Sunday and the first bit on Monday lol
there are several volleyball courts available in different areas along the beach
this area almost goes to dunes away from the restaurants, hotels and campsite
now beach sellers, there were about 4 chinese masseurs that go quietly around offering their service with a notice of prices, not too much bother
There were also about six african guys who seem to work their way from Skala Potamia and sell those make up wrist bands, they do try and build up a relationship with punters, more the young, they didn't bother us at all, too old lol
beach is narrowing a bit here
however, another couple arrived near the end of the holiday selling watches and jewellery and one who was a bit pushy annoyed me, as he passed from me to Mrs Db with his junk jewellery
so plenty of sand beach along here for a good stretch
an area without parasols at all, probably to far from everything to make a go of it
not sure whether I have mentioned this before, but on TA there are a number of reports in September with annoyance with wasps, we didn't have any problems, apart from the odd one, just like home but come September people have reported loads of them dead in the sea. So for us a time to avoid
the edges of the beach here are now starting to get pebbly
but people still happy there
another volleyball court
I can see people walking down this stretch to get the last bit of sand before the end of Skala Potamia
there is a lot of accommodation down this end and I would be disappointed if I thought it was golden beach sand all the way along, many on the Mini Train were surprised when they first saw it
but here we are on the outskirts of Skala Potamia
but the place has character and probably is the only part that could call itself the true Shirley Valentine area lol
I still laugh at the scene when they get off the coach and they said, "but there's nothing here" lol
you could say, "your brother had a small boat" and repeat all the other lines without anybody else hearing you here lol
but to the romantic, a good place to be
plenty of places to eat
You don't get the sunsets here on this coastline, as the sun sets behind the mountains
but you might be lucky and get the moonlight lol
I have cut out bits and pieces along the way
but we are now coming into the last part of Skala Potamia, the pebbles change back to sand but so many people down this end, IMO the beach is very cramped
but judge for yourselves
the beach does go very wide at this end, which helps
so I've moved on to the promenade at this point, showing loads of restaurants
shops are there too
the more conventional restaurants under cover
I doubt if google have covered all this lol
there were some bars just playing music down this end but the bar next to the one we ate in was empty but perhaps we eat too early
I haven't said much I must be out of breath lol
so as you can see, chalk, cheese but something for all
last part near the end of Skala Potamia but of course it does have roads running off with more shops / bars and retaurants
so this is the roundabout at the end with the harbour which I have already shown you
hope it give you a good idea of the place, however, the sun had now come out so just a few more shots walking back
then is was back to Mrs Db, where we had Gyros's for lunch for the first time and got hooked on them lol
hold it there Mrs Db, that last shot might not have come out lol
