Two tourists, an Israeli man and a Norwegian woman, have been kidnapped by armed men in the Sinai peninsula.

Security officials said the pair were seized while travelling between Taba, close to the border with Israel, and Dahab, around 120 miles to the south.

Kidnappings have become a growing problem in the Egyptian region during recent years, leading the Foreign Office to advise Britons against travelling to the majority of the Sinai peninsular, including the popular attraction of St Catherine’s Monastery. However, its travel ban does not include Taba, Sharm El Sheikh, Nuweiba and Dahab, or any of the roads linking these four settlements.

The advice on its website remained unchanged following the latest incident.

“The security situation outside the resort areas in the Governorate of South Sinai has deteriorated since early 2012 and there have been a number of hijacks, robberies and kidnaps in the interior of the Governorate,” it says.
