Spain, Costa Brava, Calella, Amaika Hotel _

For people who fancy All Inclusive with a bit of finesse.

We have fairly recently returned from our second stay at this hotel this year; our first visit was an 8 night stay in March to meet up with some friends from the UK and we enjoyed it so much that Ian and I diceded to have a week on our own in May.

The hotel is owned by the HTop group and is in a great position just 2 minutes walk from the lovely clean, sandy beach of Calella. On both trips we booked private transfers from barcelona Airport and were at our accommodation in well under an hour each time.

Prior to our first visit I had emailed the hotel to explain Hubbys health issues and ask if we could have a quiet room - we were given room 904 on the top floor and didn´t hear a sound all the 8 days we were there. On our return visit we were given the same room and have recently received an email from the hotel saying that we can have this room on any future visits if we give them a couple of weeks notice of our arrival.

The room was very spacious - had 3 double beds and still plenty of room to move about - and was well furnished with a flat screen TV and fridge. The bathroom was spotless and spacious with both an overbath shower and separate shower cubicle; complimentary toiletries were of a good quality and replaced as used.

The hotel bar is large and comfortable with a very good selection of A.I. drinks served in spotless glasses; table cleaning was impecable. The bar leads out to the pool which is small but rarely used with the beach so close - late May there were never more than half a dozen people sitting by it.

The restaurant is stunning and its identical extension room is a popular Wedding Reception venue. Moulded plaster ceilings and excellent service from all the waiting staff. A.I. drinks included bottles of very good Catalan Wines - or any other drinks you may prefer - at each meal with your choice of Still or Sparkling Water. The food choice was very good catering for all tastes - although you always find some people to moan about food! The Salads were excellent and every day had a selection of fish dishes to rival any good restaurant - meats tended to be local favourites such as Rabbit, Liver and Catalan Sausages.

As A.I. guests we had the option of hiring one of the Sauna and Jacuzzi suites each day for an hours private use and we made good use of this. We also used their complimentary bus to another HTop Hotel along the coast which was a good way to see other resorts but the food at the hotel we had lunch in couldn´t touch what we were used to at the Amaika. In the Summer months the hotel has a beach club wher A.I. guests can have one complimentary drink and this was a pleasant way to pass half an hour before lunch.

Staff were without exception courteous and welcoming and the standard of hotel cleanliness throughout was first class. The hotel has 4 lifts - 2 ordinary and 2 scenic - to each of the 9 floors that are very quick to arrive when called.

All in all an excellent place to stay and somewhere we will definitely return to.
