The vineyard of José L. Ferrer lies on the outskirts of the town of Binnisalem, in the central part of Majorca. This area of Majorca is recognised as the hub off the wine growing region, and there are many vineyards. As we particularly like the Rosé that this company makes, we thought we would take a tour and find out some more.



The ‘factory’ is easy to find, and easily accessible. The motorway from Palma to Alcudia runs right by it.
It’s set in a valley with a stunning backdrop of the north west coast mountains.

The first part of the tour takes you through several wall boards, containing the history of the vineyard.



Then you are shown the vats and the distillery process.





It’s also explained the difference between bottling sparkling wines whilst they mature.







It’s something you don’t really think about, but when you see the scale of the storage, - just the one vineyard – it does make you blink.





You can take a walk around outside, and see the various buildings used during different stages.



You are also shown a short video of the evolvement of the vineyard to present day mechanical processing. The ‘olden’ days of hand planting, reaping, unloading were not for the faint hearted. The video also describes how the same vines are used year in, year out, and just cut back each year, to sprout again. There are field after field of vines all set out in neat lines.







Eventually we got to Jan’s favourite bit… the wine tasting! Unfortunately for me, I was driving, so I had to make out all posh, like a wine toff, and spit out the wine after tasting it. They produce all three wines, Red, White, and Rosé, and we got to taste all three, although the emphasis is on the Reds... the most expensive one was over €30 a bottle.



There is a shop on site, where we bought a 3 bottle pack for €14.10, I’d guess that the quality of the wine would normally make the retail price around £8 - £10 a bottle here in the UK.
A pleasant way to spend a couple of hours, and see a little something else of Majorca. The cost of the tour was €6 each.

I don't think there's a UK distributor Del, I looked on the website at the list, seems to be mainly German distributors.

I would advise not to go if you aren't interested, it would be boring. You can walk around outside for free anyway, no real need to go behind the scenes as such. Shop is open to anyone.

To be honest, I wouldn't go.....

It's only the end result in the glass which I'm interested in......

But when I /we go to Majorca, I like to do a bit of touring, as sitting on the beach all day for several days running gets a bit boring as well.

Seen the place but not been on the tour so I was interested in this Resort Review.There is an extensive range of Jose Ferrer's wines on the list at Restaurant Stay on the marina in Pto Pollensa and at least some choices at other mid-to-top end restos in PP.The reds are more suited to my palate and I tried in Rest Corb Mari a modestly priced Ferrer Cab Sauv which had a bit of a salty aftertaste.Not unappealing and not so pronounced as in Manzanilla sherry.

Never seen Majorcan wines for sale in UK.(Have seen Majorcan new potatoes grown in Sa Pobla for sale in Leicester Market though :o )

Me and Mrs H went there a couple of years back, we were very disappointed. The tour for some reason were cancelled but there was no information in the so called visitor centre to say when the next one would be and nobody seemed to know or want to tell me lots of shrugged shoulders, I don't think the staff have grasped the concept of that they are employed to do.

We ended up having a drive around the area and stopped off at Vins Nadal, a tiny vineyard with a small ramshackle outbuilding where you could purchase some of their products. I don't think anything had changed there for generations.There were huge vats where you could bulk purchase the wines if you had your own containers. No visitor centre here but in my opinion all the better for it.
