the brecon beacons are 515 square miles beeech,a long walk methinks.
the walk i do has many different ways up and down,i like what is known as the three peaks walk, the pen y fan,the cribbin and the corn ddu.
an average fit person can get to the 1st peak in a little over an hour, but why rush with such scenery.the other 2 peaks are about half hour either side.my walk is from the storey arms or the little picnic site about half a mile down the road, there are also longer walks like the one along the spine from brecon, you can see this in one of my pics.
another place i like to walk is the elan valley, famous for it's reservoirs, they feed birmingham??
i'm up the fans in the am but the weather is not looking good, murky and damp but i might get the odd shot or two.
they also do walking holidays in the area with lots of hostels dotted about.
i was born not far from brecon in builth wells hospital but lived in a small village called tirabad,27 houses,1 phone box,1shop,1 horse town, lol santa

You be careful yozef and leave a note on your car windscreen of your intended route and estimated return time.Winter fell walking can be dangerous as you yourself have mentioned previously.I see a guy was killed in a fall on Helvellyn in the Lake District today.Helvellyn is higher than Pen Y Fan but 450 ft lower than Mt Snowdon which is the highest mountain in England and Wales. The much maligned Head of Manchester Police froze to death just below the summit of Snowdon a few years ago.

I have not seen a detailed report of the Helvellyn tragedy but the radio news bulletin said he fell from a ridge and sustained head injuries.I suspect the ridge may have been Striding Edge which is one of the hairiest ridge walks in England and at this time of year will be all snow and ice.If that is where he was,and reportedly he wasn't climbing alone,he should have been roped, carrying two ice axes and wearing crampons. You can see some videos of Striding Edge on YouTube.Imagine what it is like in midwinter. It might be only 3,000ft up but that is hostile territory.I think Julia Bradbury attempted Striding Edge on BBC Wainwrights Walks but the weather was so foul she had to give up.

I have done a fair amount of fell walking in Snowdonia and Lake District in my earlier years. My first wife and I went on a Mountain Leadership residential course based in Bowness on Windermere which was run by Central Council of Physical Recreation. It was one of the best, most interesting and fulfilling holidays I have ever had.(Before I went to Majorca!)I saw so many mountain tops in the Lakes I had never been to before. And of course it majored on safety. The instructor,Dave, was a member of Wasdale Head Mountain Rescue Team and to illustrate the dangers, even in summer,he told some harrowing tales.Like of a young couple who at Easter set out ill-equipped to walk up Scafell Pike,England's highest mountain 3,210 ft.They had not enquired how long it would take them and although they reached the summit darkness overtook them and they were found frozen to death huddled in the bleak stone shelter at the summit.

As Dave said fell walking is a healthy, invigorating and rewarding pastime but under-estimate the dangers at your peril.

Yes left my car at Boddington Hill one Christmas to do a run and found on returning the lock had been screwdrivered didn't
have any values inside but had to replace the lock.

Many of the beauty spots are targeted regularly and wallets and handbags taken from cars but people still think its
safe to leave such stuff.
