Mogan

Mrs Delboy and I took a day trip to Mogan from Puerto Rico by boat. The water was a little choppy when we arrived and we were helped onto jetty. Mogan had a lovely harbour with restaurants around two sides. We sat down, had a coffee and watched the small fish darting around the small boats in the harbour.

Next to the harbour entrance one could explore a small village built in the Venetian style. The buildings were holiday apartments for hire. Sometimes a water channel would run under the apartments to authenticate the feel of Venice.

Walking down the streets in the village made you feel as if you were part of this small Italian community, various flowers hung from balcony windows

Further down the harbour there was a small white sandy beach with chair beds and parasols, with restaurants and apartments at the back of the beach. I am not sure whether this beach would be big enough to sustain a large holiday population in the future.

Walking into centre part of the resort it opened up into a very wide boulevard and led to the back of town where very modern hotels and complexes with large swimming pools had been built.

The original Mogan village was built into rocks and was at the back of the harbour.

After a long walk passing these new hotels we returned back to the harbour and had lunch in one of the taverns, the food was not expensive and the views were great.

Summing up, it was a very nice, clean place and one day perhaps will go back again.

I agree it looks a really nice place.Bit of style which you can't say about Playa del Ingles or even Maspalomas where we stayed on Gran Canaria.Only the vast beach and sand dunes are worth going back for.I haven't fancied Puerto Rico because a mate told me it's hilly and not good for getting about on foot.Is that right and is Mogan the same place as Puerto Mogan? delboy Can you advise please?

Puerto Rico has been built down the sides of two valleys which lead down to the sea. The valley down to the main Puerto Rico beach has the most accommodation behind it.

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Dscf0023

Accommodation in this area can be hundreds of feet up the hillside and some tourists can have up to 180 steps to climb each evening. The main restaurants and shops lay in the bottom of this valley and is regarded as the main entertainment centre for the area and various reports that we have read state they can hear Elvis Presley impersonator’s echoing up the valley till 4 am in the morning.

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Dscf0024

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Dscf0025

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Dscf0026

Fortunately, wise Mrs Delboy booked us into the Gloria Palace in 2005 which straddles the two valleys at the bottom, well away from any entertainment centre. The hotel was massive if you were unlucky one would need 3 lifts to reach the beach walkway but great views from the rooms. The front entrance to the beach is not user friendly as a busy road divides the hotel from the beach walkway so using the lifts were essential.

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Dscf0027

We stayed on bed and breakfast basis; the breakfast was help yourself and was excellent. I understand now you can only get half board at this hotel. To get to the Puerto Rica beach was 5mins, Amadoreus Beach 10mins and to the entertainment centre was approx 15 mins

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Dscf0028

The second valley and its beach, which is accessed by a walkway, was not so populated but was under heavy construction from a massive hotel complex, which I am sure is now well complete.

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Dscf0033

The beach there is called Amadoreus is manmade with crushed white coral and looked very attractive. A number of restaurants were positioned at the end of this beach and did good trade during the day but come evening most of the trade seemed to head for the main centre.

Food in the resort was reasonable and one of the restaurants on Puerto Rica beach offered t-bone steaks for 7 euro’s but generally 10 euro’s was the price.

We enjoyed the Italian restaurant in the centre called Pinocchio’s and we had several meals there. There was another restaurant called Don Quixote around the harbour which was so good that the only way to get a table was to book it the day before.

Puerto Beach was also manmade with good sand and the chair beds were 2.5 euro’s and a parasol 2 euro’s. There were various boat trips available from the harbour.

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Dscf0029

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Dscf0030

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Dscf0031

Summing up it is difficult to find a self catering apartment/ hotel without a strenuous walk up lots of steps and when you do find one, noise could be a problem. There is a RUI next to the Gloria Palace in an equally good position but that would be AI.

Pictures / prices mentioned were in 2005

Another thumbs down here for Gran Canaria.

I've been twice and wouldn't go again. It's hard to put my finger on what I didn't like, but it wasn't the hills or the weather or the scenery. Just something...

Unlike my favourite place, Mallorca, I found the inhabitants very grasping, not as welcoming, not as committed to customer service. And another thing. We're all used to the lookee lookee men, but in Gran Canaria I felt they were very aggressive. I saw some old ladies walking to the beach through that little park area in Puerto Rico. There were some women doing that 'grab your wrist and fuse on a rope bracelet' thing. These old ladies refused to pay and then the heavies came out from behind the trees. It was awful. We found the only way to get through that area was to walk around with your arms folded.

Another thing that jarred was the proliferation of Irish bars. I've nothing against the Irish and I know a lot of people like that type of bar, but I'm not keen myself.

Yep, i'll 2nd that silvertyne, on my one and only trip to GC, I asked a barman at our hotel (sort of top end of maspalomas) why they didn't sell 1 litre bottles of water, as we had to go round the corner to the supermarket to get them, he said "don't tell us what to do in our country!"
I did laugh actually, as it's a sentiment that I might come out with myself from time to time Wink , but I managed to get in a retort that it was only their country as we had given it back to them cos it was worthless Very Happy
Not sure of the accuracy of that but it got his back up Very Happy but I made sure he didn't serve me again as I didn't want any 'extra mozzarella' on anything Mad

Oh dear mark that response does not become you.I am sure you didn't intend to come across as arrogant but we Brits have to realise we no longer rule Europe let alone the world. And we have never had Spain (apart from Gibraltar) under our flag.We might have, thanks to Frank Drake and his backing from the monarch, beaten Phil the Spaniard and his Armada but though we ruled the seas we never owned their land.

Your quite right wirral, i'd wished i'd not said it after but there you go, there was no need for him to bite at me either.
I seem to remember Lord Nelson having a pop at taking over the Canaries during his heyday, school history lessons ring a bell with him losing his arm in the fight there.

Myself and Mrs H have been to Gran Canaria a couple of times the first to Maspalomas which was OK the accommodation was a bit basic and the second time was in 2005 when we stayed in Costa Meloneras. Costa Meloneras is really just an extension of Maspalpmas heading west along the coast from the lighthouse at El Faro

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Imgp0210

We stayed the then fairly new H10 Costa Meloneras Palace, it was a fantastic (if a but unusual in style) hotel. Being not long open everything was very pristine. The rooms were very spacious with a large balcony from which we had a great sea view. Because the hotel was low rise it didn't really feel like a hotel. Most of the room blocks were just 2 storeys high. WE were there in June and the whole island was relatively quiet as was our hotel which was probably why we got such a bargain. We had 2 weeks half board and paid I think just over £700 each flying from Aberdeen. The hotel is very spread out over a large well landscaped area with lots of areas for sunbathing. The hotel was very quiet for most of our stay apart from the middle weekend when loads of people from mainland Spain arrived to celebrate a mid summer fire festival.

Our Room which was large with a huge bathroom that had twin sinks and a separate shower cubicle as well as bath.
Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas 33310

The way the hotel was built you were never really aware of the rest of the hotel the view from our terrace was as if it was an individual house
Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas 66610

The design of the hotel was supposed to have been inspired by Antonio Gaudi
Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas 22211

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas 11111

The pool was always very quiet even when the hotel was full at the weekend there was no scrum for sun loungers
Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas Imgp0515

Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Mogan, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas 77710

The food at the hotel was the best we have ever had while staying half board. The choice at breakfast was incredible and the evening meals were very good for buffet style food. There were a couple of chefs cooking various meat and fish to order as well as a large carvery with lots of different roast meats. There was a selection of freshly cooked paste with a few different pasta sauces as well. You could upgrade to a la carte if you wanted at extra cost which we did on a couple of occasions which was wonderful. The food was exceptional and it wasn't to expensive to upgrade to the a la carte restaurant.

We were just happy doing nothing and taking each day as it came and saying we will do something tomorrow but we hardly did anything. We would stroll down to the lighthouse area for lunch or after our evening meal for a drink, we went into Maspalomas/Playa del Inglese a couple of times for shopping and only did one trip which was to Puerto Mogan.

We were told that there was a bus to Puerto Mogan from the bus station in Maspalomas/Playa del Inglese so we set off one day in a taxi to the buss station. We arrived at the bus station just as the bus to Puerto Mogan was leaving. So we had to hang around for half an hour for the next bus. WE jumped on the bus which headed out of Maspalomas along the coast stopping here and there to pick up passengers. It headed along the main road west and then turned into a built up area it stopped at a bus stop no more than 100 yards from our hotel. It then headed on through Puerto rico to Puerto Mogan.

Now Puerto Mogan is a beautiful place very peaceful and charming. If I was to go back to Gran Canaria it would be to there. There is not much in the way of hotels in Puerto Mogan and it looks generally unspoilt. We wandered around had a spot of lunch and a beer or two.

After spending most of the day in Puerto Mogan we caught a boat to Puerto Rico. I wasn't too keen on Puerto Rico it was too much of a man made resort with very little atmosphere or charm especially after Mogan. WE had a wander round and then caught the bus back to Maspalomas. However, this time we got off the bus at our hotel which saved us about half an hour on the bus and a 6 euro taxi ride Laughing

Hayzer

Lovely posting

you were there about 5 months before us, the new development at Mogan was going on at the back of town when we were there, with a lot of new big hotels.

The hotel you stayed in looks excellent and the deal you got was really good was that package or independent?

It was actually a package, I couldn't get anywhere close to that booking myself. The original price was about £830 if I remember correctly but there was an online discount and our local Going Places had a pledge to beat any online price which to their credit they did.

We booked those weeks as they were the cheapest by quite some way. Once you got into July the prices rocketed to around £1500 for a fortnight.
