Our first port of call on our Tennessee road trip was the City of Memphis, where we wanted to do the Elvis experience, as well as the whole 'birthplace of rock n roll' associated venture.
We chose the Days Inn, Graceland hotel/motel simply because of the proximity to Graceland, it's literally across the street, as well as the whole Elvis Plaza next door, with rock and roll museums of cars/movies/vegas years etc.
We'd read some reviews before going, so knew it wasn't a top notch 4 star hotel, but that it would serve a purpose.
That's exactly what we found.
A simple, straightforward hotel room:
We found the bed quite comfy, we slept ok anyway.
The hotel had a quirky guitar shaped swimming pool
...and the whole hotel was literally plastered with Elvis this, Elvis that, Gold discs on the walls, music piped all day and night, 3 Elvis channels on the TV (2 showing films and one showing concert footage)...
The hotel offered free breakfast, which was ok, filled a gap, but very basic, just cereals and toast and coffee/tea really. Free wi fi, free parking.
But the major selling point is simply the location. Walk across the road and you're at Graceland.
The rumour is that this hotel, under a different name, was what was the original Heartbreak Hotel, of course the Presley Estate has since copyrighted the name and built a dedicated hotel of that name, however, the rumour satisfies the many stories...
All in all, a good start to the road trip, we paid $99 a night (£60) for this hotel, I would recommend it purely for the location. It's about 15 minutes into (downtown) Memphis from this hotel, so not centrally located, but the taxi back after our night out was just $20 (£12), we caught the free bus into town from the Elvis Plaza.
