The Pestana Casino hotel is located above the harbour in Funchal, the Capital of Madeira.

We booked the hotel and flights DIY, and went in January 2008.
The hotel was rated as 5* by Alpharooms, arguably it was by Mediterranean standards.


The room had a large double bed, fridge, TV with BBC & ITV, also a DVD player.


We stayed B & B and the breakfast was just about all you could wish for, bucks fizz on the outside deck afterwards being very popular.


We had room service burgers one night which were quite good.

There was plenty of sunbathing places with good views out to sea.

Bath robes were provided…


…and you could take the lift dressed in your bathrobe straight down into the indoor pool & sauna complex.

I have used this picture as my avatar on TA for a while now; this is the ‘infinity’ pool. The sea is at least 200 metres lower than the pool!

It’s quite deceiving if you catch it right.
A week of winter sun in comfortable surroundings, temps about 24 C in January, we would go again.

That looks nice Mark, Blue skies and Men in White and you could even have been overlooking Wirral on his cruise. The
holiday companies often use the shot overlooking the pool on TV. Great pics

Think you had a better time in Madeira than we did.So called 5* hotel with Saga in January.Weather was wet and misty (OK that's nobody's fault) but not impresed with hotel.Be sure Saga don't book the best hotels anywhere.Free this, free that doesn't make amends for poor expensive hotel.Also had a 48 hr stay in Funchal on a cruise.Won't be going back.

Have visited Madeira twice.

First time stayed at Machico in the Hotel Dom Pedro - 4 star superior and very nice.

Second time stayed in Funchal - same rated hotel that I can't remember the name of at the moment. It was up a long/steep/narrow backstreet and, although was probably smart back in the 1930s, the hotel now was very shabby and far from what you expect for 4 star + accommodation. Had a day trip out to Machico and called into the Dom Pedro to find it far from the standard we remembered.

Sadly we found returning to Madeira to be a mistake and doubt we will go back in the future.
